The primary function of a thermostatic mixing valve is to blend hot and cold water to achieve a desired and safe outlet temperature. They are designed to prevent scalding or discomfort caused by water that is too hot, especially for vulnerable individuals such as children, the elderly, or people with disabilities.
TMVs typically consist of a temperature-sensitive element, such as a wax capsule or a bimetallic coil, which expands or contracts in response to changes in water temperature. This element is connected to a valve mechanism that adjusts the flow of hot and cold water to maintain the desired outlet temperature.
The valve is set to a specific temperature, usually between 38°C (100°F) and 49°C (120°F), which can be adjusted according to the application's requirements. If the incoming hot water temperature rises above the set temperature, the valve reduces the flow of hot water and increases the flow of cold water to maintain a consistent outlet temperature. Similarly, if the hot water temperature drops below the set temperature, the valve adjusts to provide more hot water and less cold water.
Thermostatic mixing valves provide an added layer of safety by preventing rapid fluctuations in water temperature due to variations in the supply pressure or temperature. They help reduce the risk of scalding and ensure a comfortable and safe water temperature for users.
